Have you heard of the Infinite Monkey Theorem?

It’s a premise based on the laws of probability and it goes something like this: if you have an unlimited number of monkeys and you give each of them a typewriter, they’ll eventually produce an outstanding piece of writing…

Maybe even the complete works of Shakespeare!

This is just a theory of course but sometimes it feels like the internet is a massive, ongoing experiment of the Infinite Monkey Theorem. It’s like we’re all typing out a bunch of random words hoping to hit gold and it’s mainly because of what I like to call the “invisible writing and copywriting factory rules.”

These are rules countless entrepreneurs, copywriters and even writing coaches and teachers feel compelled to follow —  tried and tested copy techniques, messaging, and marketing formulas that are supposed to give us the results we’re looking for.

We believe marketing and copy experts who say things like “use this copy template and you’ll exponentially grow your audience engagement and sales.” So we go ahead and set aside our natural creativity, voice, and style and end up getting lost in the crowd because we sound exactly like everyone else!

Don’t get me wrong –  the gurus are mostly telling the truth. Lots of writing formulas can help you grab attention but when it comes to spiritual audiences, using mainstream copywriting rules that are designed to artificially shock, and evoke painful emotions will repel not attract.

So what can you do instead?

Avoid using “hit ’em between the eyes” copy.  This is basically anything that screams “buy my stuff!!!” where you’ll see aggressive phrases like:

1) Killer sales

2) Slay the competition

3) Explode your email list

Instead, choose inspiring yet powerful substitutes for your spiritual audience like:

1) Remarkable sales (vs killer sales)

2) Rise above the rest (vs slay the competition)

3) Expand your email subscriber list (vs explode your email list)

Spiritual audiences tend to be introverted and sensitive so harsh words and language grate on their nerves like nails on a chalkboard.

If you’re an entrepreneur with a spiritual business or if your ideal clients are spiritually inclined you’re going to want to do an “energy check” with the words that appear on your website pages, social content, and especially in your sales copy.

I encourage you to use energetic tools that feel comfortable to you — a pendulum, muscle testing, checking in with your Guides or your intuition.

Sometimes asking yourself a simple honest question is enough — something like “does this sales email/social post/blog post feel good to me?” If your answer is no, allow yourself to edit.

Always feel into the words that you write. If they don’t feel aligned, don’t use them. There are a gazillion words out there… keep writing until you find the ones that feel right.

When you do, you’ll be rewarded with a loyal, engaged audience who genuinely love you and who’ll be happy to work with you and buy from you again and again…

No “slaying” required!
