I’ve never opened up about this before because I have trouble talking about myself BUT I feel it’s important that I share this with you today. So here goes…
I built my writing and copywriting business from literally nothing all the way up to 6-figures purely through word-of-mouth recommendations.
This means I’ve never run a Facebook ad. I’ve never sent a “cold” email offering my services. I’ve never hopped on social media to DM anyone.
Just to be clear, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of these techniques.
Ads, DMs, and all the rest are effective ways to connect with potential clients and customers and I applaud entrepreneurs who ethically use these platforms to grow their spiritual, conscious business.
But I’ve never had to find clients using any of these methods because new clients find me.
And when I ask how they did, they tell me that it’s because a friend or mastermind buddy talked about my work.
Sometimes they find out about me from a coach they met at a conference or some other event.
Over the years, I’ve consistently had past and current clients volunteer to share my name and contact information with other spiritual or conscious business owners…
Entrepreneurs who want to work with an ethical copywriter who can write with integrity and attract hundreds of thousands of dollars (and sometimes even over a million dollars! ) in sales 🙂
I feel deeply blessed and grateful for this and when I reflect on my journey, I can say that one of the biggest reasons why clients are excited to share my details is because I can tune into their energy.
Here’s what I mean…
As an intuitive writer and copywriter, I tap into my clients’ writing voice and style and I channel their energy into words.
It’s how I create blog posts and sales content that sounds like it was written by them (if you’re curious to know more, I’ll get into the exact process in an upcoming note :-))
But today, I want to say something that needs to be said and it’s something most people don’t realize…
There is one person who can do a better job than any copywriter in the world…
It’s someone most entrepreneurs never truly consider or even if they do, they don’t believe this person is up for the job.
I’m talking about the entrepreneur herself and that means you!
The truth is we can all write and with a little bit of time, patience and practice we can write well (way beyond what we think we’re capable of).
So if you’re feeling like you’re a terrible writer or that you just can’t get the words out every time you sit down to write, I’m going to tell you why.
It’s because you’re second-guessing yourself.
You’re questioning your voice and your style. Somewhere deep inside, you believe the words you choose, the message you’re trying to convey isn’t good enough or clear enough or fancy enough.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…
The best writer — and if you’re an entrepreneur the best copywriter — in the world is YOU.
Hands down. No question.
Let’s imagine you’re about to write a social media post. You have a topic but you’re feeling stuck. You’re wondering what to write. How you’re going to string those sentences together.
Here’s what I want you to know…
The words that go with that idea or topic you have in mind, are already inside you ( if they weren’t, you wouldn’t have come up with it in the first place).
So the real reason you’re stuck?
You’re thinking about what people will think or do and how they’re going to react when they read your words.
When you start to focus on what they’re going to do, you’re shifting focus away from what truly matters…
You’re not writing from your heart and allowing the words to flow and it’s because of a bunch of core fears we all have – fear of judgment and criticism — and maybe the worst one of all — fear of rejection. We’re thinking…
What if people don’t like what I write?
It’s one of the most terrifying questions a writer can ask herself and here’s the answer…
If they don’t like what you write it’s because they’re not your ideal audience.
That’s the wondrous thing about writing from the heart.
You’ll naturally attract the readers, customers and clients that are right for YOU.
Everyone else — the ones who don’t get you, the ones who are not the right fit for you and your gifts — will fall away.
So here’s my question…
Isn’t it tragic that we allow our words and our creative expression to be guided, dictated and controlled by people who aren’t the right fit for you in the first place?
So write from your heart, dear friend.
Say what you want to say. What you need to say. Forget about everyone else. Forget about what they’ll say or what they’ll think.
When you write from your heart, when you write with passion, with purpose, with trust, and vulnerability…
The right people will love you and your words. The right people will be drawn to you. The right people will benefit from your message.
And isn’t that the only real reason to write at all?
