Lots of conscious, spiritual entrepreneurs don’t like writing for their business or they think they don’t have what it takes to get it right.
If you can relate I’m going to go ahead and say “hire a copywriter” is probably close to the top of your business priority list. You can’t wait to get someone else to do all the writing so you can dive into creation mode and do the things you love to do in your business 🙂
So first, the bad news (but I promise there’s good news right after, so keep reading!)…
Your copywriter is pretty much the LAST person you should hire for your business.
If you’re a brand new entrepreneur or if you’re just beginning to gain momentum and traction in your business, it’s safe to say you don’t have a big audience and people don’t know you yet.
You might not have a clear message and you probably aren’t sure of what you want to offer or how you want to express yourself.
If this is you, investing hard earned cash on a copywriter is like throwing all of that money out of the window because she simply CANNOT attract your clients for you or attract a ton of sales and here’s why…
She’s not you! That’s stating the obvious — I know — but stay with me for a second 🙂
If you want to create an aligned, engaged audience who loves you and what you do, if you want clients, customers, fans and followers who will buy from you again and again then you need to understand one critically important element…
You need to understand your personal tone and style when you write.
This is also known as your writing voice and it’s basically your Energy of Expression coming through in your words.
Your writing voice is THE secret essence that makes you YOU on the page (I dive deep into the writing voice in my ebook Channeling Your True Voice. It’s free and you can get it here if you like :-))
Here’s the thing…
When you’re truly tuned in and tapped into your Energy of Expression and your writing voice, you’ll stand out and be seen for your unique, original style.
Your soulmate clients will connect with you and follow you because they resonate with YOU and your energy.
Writing in your voice will start to make writing for your business feel a lot easier, a lot more graceful and a lot more fun because you don’t have to force yourself to string words together in a way that feels forced and unnatural.
Plus sharing your true voice with people will help you grow a loyal audience who will love you for who you truly are and the gifts you have to offer.
You’ll get noticed for being YOU plus something powerful happens when you write in your voice consistently…
People will recognize your posts and emails even before they see your name.
Let’s put this to the test with a little game 🙂
Take a quick read:
I want a Faith that comforts my hunger pains. I want a Faith so protective that it keeps the painful agitation of doubt at bay. Faith like a flashlight on the best decision. A Faith that fuels me to keep doing what needs to be done.
Who do you think wrote that passage?
A. Danielle LaPorte
B. Napoleon Hill
C. Marie Forleo
D. The Rock
Let me give you a hint… it’s not The Rock 😀
If you chose A, you’re spot on and I’m willing to bet you got it right if you follow Danielle LaPorte and read her stuff.
I’d love for you to take a stroll through the World Wide Web and start identifying the Energy of Expression behind specific writing voices.
I’d say Danielle’s is modern, poetic and inspirational.
Here are 2 more:
When I was 21 years old, I fell in love with a fragmented woman.
She was beautiful, brilliant, generous and kind — with Frida Kahlo’s artistic sensibility (and striking eyebrows), Florence Nightingale’s compassion, and a mind packed with more zany ebullience than a Monty Python marathon.
That’s from one of my favorite writers, Alex Franzen. She’s amazing. Her voice is honest, passionate, and incredibly creative.
And this last one…
If I could go back in time to advise my past self from 25 years ago, I’d do my best to teach him how to access his own reasoning; pay attention to his instinctual feelings; and articulate, trust, and more vehemently defend his own preferences, even when others disagree.
That’s the Grand Master of the internet, Steve Pavlina (I call him that because he’s been blogging since 2004… aka forever).
Steve’s voice is direct, smart and insightful
These writing voices are distinctive, they’re memorable and they evoke different emotions…
And that’s because they’re infused with the writer’s Energy of Expression. They’re imbued with creativity and love and inspiration or some other feeling the writer wants to convey with their words.
This is why you need to write in your own voice before you hire a copywriter because the truth is…
No copywriter – no matter how great, no matter how talented, no matter how amazing – can write in your voice if you haven’t done it first!
You need to know your voice, and write in your voice. You need to live and breathe your voice through your words, intimately, and consistently before you can even think about guiding someone else to write like you.
Your writing voice is beyond important because it makes your words yours and it transforms your words into an expression of your soul.
And that’s something we need to do – something we must do — if we want to start and run a business that’s a reflection of our values and how we want to show up and serve the world.
